The revelation arrived late in the Nov. 3 edition of Handsome, the podcast that Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster and Mae Martin co-host. Feimster told the singer she regretted the pain men had caused her but not the songs it produced, then asked whether she had ever wanted to be a lesbian. Morissette replied that she is pansexual. When Notaro expressed doubt and asked whether that was really true, the singer said it was.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
The hosts joked that she might have opened the episode with such a disclosure, and Morissette answered that she likes to keep it for the epilogue. Pansexuality describes sexual, romantic or emotional attraction toward people irrespective of their gender identity or sex.[S1]
Earlier remarks and a legal fight
Morissette had already spoken about a same-sex kiss on screen. In a September appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, she described her 2000 guest role on Sex and the City, saying the idea for a lesbian moment involving Carrie came from her, and that the show's team had been thinking along the same lines. She remembered the kiss with Sarah Jessica Parker as pleasant, and called the experience easy and buoyant.[S1]
More recently she has faced less welcome coverage. In September she sued her former tour manager in Los Angeles, accusing Keren Urinov of trying to blackmail her by attempting to frame her for drug trafficking. The suit describes the ex-employee as disgruntled and alleges she sought to extort Morissette after drugs were found in her luggage during a European tour, with an apparent plan to place blame on the singer.[S1]
A career that keeps expanding
Morissette broke through in 1995 with Jagged Little Pill, a record that became one of the decade's biggest sellers and one of its defining releases. The album was turned into a Broadway musical in 2019, a production that earned her two Tony Awards. This year brought her induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.[S1]
