Premiere Dates and New Wednesday Block
ABC has scheduled the ninth season of The Rookie to premiere on Jan. 6, relocating the crime procedural to a new night and time: Wednesdays at 9 PM. The debut will serve as a lead-in for the new spinoff The Rookie: North, which will also launch on Jan. 6 and air at 10 PM. The announcement was made during a sizzle reel presented at New York Comic-Con on Sunday, offering a first look at the upcoming seasons. This marks the eighth time period change for The Rookie, which had started its eighth season in the Tuesday 10 PM slot before being moved to Mondays at 10 PM to accommodate ABC's new light character-based procedural R.J. Decker.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S7][S8]
The two series will now run as a block on Wednesday, likely following ABC's comedy lineup of Abbott Elementary and Shifting Gears. ABC has not yet announced its midseason schedule, but the 8-9 PM Wednesday slot has traditionally been home to its comedies, with Abbott Elementary as the anchor for a full 22-episode season, while Scrubs and Shifting Gears have limited-run orders, one for fall and one for midseason. The pairing of The Rookie and The Rookie: North was anticipated, as networks often use such blocks to launch spinoffs and facilitate crossovers.[S1]
Teaser Reveals Kidnapping Rescue and New Characters
The teaser unveiled at New York Comic-Con shows LAPD squad members Tim (Eric Winter) and Lucy (Melissa O'Neil) in captivity, with Tim being tortured, and a dangerous rescue operation led by John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and his team. The cliffhanger from the Season 8 finale involved the kidnapping of Tim and Lucy, and the new season will pick up with their rescue mission. The teaser also introduces Jay Ellis as Alex Holland, a midlife career changer who becomes a cop in a leafier, more rural environment, facing similar challenges to Nolan but with the same conviction.[S1][S6]
At the New York Comic-Con panel for the Rookie franchise, Alexi Hawley — who created, executive produces and runs both shows — shared the guest casting news. Troian Bellisario takes on a recurring role in The Rookie's ninth season as Stephanie Monroe, a single mom in her thirties who wants to start over as a cop and gets paired with Nolan; Fillion described her as the rookie he has most enjoyed training. Dulé Hill appears as Lt. Hughes, a thirty-year veteran who is distracted as he adjusts to being Watch Commander amid troubles at home. Molly Kunz plays Quinn, a small-town woman set on becoming an LA EMT. Andy Allo also guests in The Rookie: North's first season as Brooke, a first-year ER resident who connects with a rookie cop (Ellis).[S1]
Crossovers and Production Details
The Rookie: North takes place in the Pacific Northwest and shoots in Vancouver, whereas The Rookie stays set and filmed in Los Angeles. Both are ABC shows that stream on Hulu the following day, and Lionsgate Television produces them alongside 20th Television. Crossovers are in the works: Fillion turns up in The Rookie: North's pilot, and Hawley told Deadline back in May that he pictured two or three crossover episodes each season. He also said at the NYCC panel that Winter and O'Neil will show up in the spinoff. As announced at Comic-Con, The Rookie's Season 9 opener will be split into two parts.[S1]
